Luton

Several time during 1944 I visited the town of Luton on a weekend pass. It is a small friendly town halfway between London and Bedford.

I stayed in a small hotel - they would put 6 or 8 beds in a room and the GIs would pay a small amount to sleep there for a night. The hotel was one of the friendliest that I stayed in while I was in England. The name of the hotel was the The George Hotel Luton

The landlady always had Scotch Whiskey for the GIs at a very small cost, less than any of the other pubs. She also served us fresh eggs for breakfast which was a real treat.

Below are some pictures of Luton. Luton was off the beaten path and very few GIs stayed there.
