V-E DAY TUESDAY, MAY 8, 1945
VICTORY IN EUROPE) THE WAR IN EUROPE IS OVER! WHAT A DAY TO CELEBRATE!
We were confined to our Air Base on this day. Why? Because the top brass thought that this was England’s Day. England’s Day to celebrate without the Yanks. We did nothing - only loafed, relaxed, and talked about what would happen next.
Someone got a couple cases of beer from somewhere - not much to go around but we all had a couple and enjoyed them.
A few days later after everything quieted down a little, we had a lot of meetings and interviews.
We did see films that showed how the Germans treated the Jews in the concentration Camps. I'm glad they never showed these films to the American public in general. They were horrible.
After several weeks we were divided into three groups:
I was put into the first group and was supposed to go directly to the Pacific Theater.
In the meantime we were packing up all supplies and sending them all to a Centralized AAF Supply Depot.
Group Number l was then transferred to the 35th Air Depot Supply Squadron. We kept the same address as this was only a paperwork transfer at the time.
One morning we were called to assembly in the parade ground area. The Major in charge of the Squadron had an announcement to make. He told us all plans for us to go directly to the Pacific had been changed. He said that the sad news was that we were going first back to the States for a 30 day Rest and Recuperation furlough at our respective homes. After this we were to reassemble at another Air Base and be trained for the Pacific Theater.
